Was that really necessary? Britney is a mess but did she really need a police chopper because she didn’t want to turn over her kids? Jayden James had an unexplained bruise that she didn’t cause.

Jayden James was released this morning, but Britney remains hospitalized under suicide watch and psychiatric care. Police are reporting that she was under the influence of an unknown substance.

According to new reports

, it was the court-appointed monitor that called police when Unfitney began behaving erratically on Thursday.

“She had already put Preston in the car when Britney locked herself in a room with Jayden,” a source tells People. “The cops came and got through the door and tied her down to a gurney.”

LAPD called the incident an “ongoing investigation.”

Sean Preston was taken to the hospital by Federline’s assistant, and Jayden James was in the ambulance with the monitor, a source says, adding that the boys “won’t be back with [Spears] for a long time.”

By all accounts, Britney suffered a severe mental breakdown last night.

“They had to strap her down like a mental patient and she was going between laughing and hysterics,” a source tells Us Weekly, calling it “a total psychotic breakdown. She just went crazy.”

Another Spears pal says: “I guess she has good days and bad days – it’s mental instability. All she has is to think of something sad and she goes crazy.”

Britney’s dad, Jamie, remains at the hospital.

It will be interesting to see if Lynne or Jamie Lynn fly out to LA to be with Britney.
